
Students participate in many reading activities that grow their love for reading! Reading centers, guided reading groups, and whole group instruction are a part of our daily literacy routine!
In reading, students participate in:
- Higher Order Thinking Question Stems
- Comprehension strategies before/during/after reading
- Peer collaboration in differentiated literacy centers
- Marzano’s squares to increase vocabulary
- Hands-on phonics letter building tiles
- Sight word games to increase automaticity
- Anchor charts and graphic organizers to support learning
- Utilizing Smart board to compare texts
- Classroom library with books sorted by level and genre
- Monthly-themed homework reading challenges
Students enjoy interactive, cooperative daily centers where they practice vocabulary, sight words, phonics and comprehension strategies.
Authentic Writing Tasks
Students take ownership of their writing through authentic writing tasks. I incorporate writing assignments which allow students to enjoy the writing process.
In our classroom, writing includes:
- Writer’s Workshop and conferencing
- Holiday Mail for Heroes – letter writing to soldiers through the Red Cross
- What Would I do with $100 on Hundred’s Day Writing Prompt
- Research Project with use of technology
- Informational, Opinion and Narrative writing
- Peer-assessing with student created rubrics
